Fundamentals
Respect the Sauna
- This sauna is transfeminine in spirit. We built it for ourselves and everyone else.
- We put in many hours of work to build a beautiful building. We want it to stay beautiful. Respect it by not bringing food, drink or drugs into the sauna.
- Do not change anything about the sauna. Do not use it to store things, do not affix things onto the sauna or write on it.
- Please return all things where they belong after use.
- Always lock the sauna when not in use.
Respect each other
- Everyone who takes part in our struggle is welcome in the sauna.
- We want to let naked bodies exist unbothered, especially transfeminine bodies. We welcome nudity in the sauna.
- We ask you to let each other exist unbothered.
- If there’s someone in the sauna already: Ask if it’s okay to join!
- Some things to think about: Can you go swim in a public bath? Can you jump in the river on a hot day? Can you use the gym changing room? Can you walk in the street without fear of constant harrassment? Can you be naked without feeling the implication that your naked body is an intrusion? Or that your mere presence in a space of nudity is predatory and violent?
Access & Safety
- It is unclear how easily COVID is transmitted in a sauna. For the moment, sauna use is in small predefined groups. This way, you can use the sauna with people you trust.
- Sauna can be stressful for your body. Check with a doctor if you have conditions that affect your heart or circulation.
- The sauna is in the garden. The way there involves grass and light gravel. The entrance into the sauna is one 20cm step up.
- The door to the sauna is 75cm wide.
Using the Sauna
Make a fire in the oven
- Empty the ash box. It is located below the oven door. Ash and embers can continue to smolder for days – this is why they belong in a metal container and not in the trash or compost. Put the empty ash box back in the oven.
- Build the fire by loosely stacking two or three pieces of hardwood, then add some kindling on top.
- Light a fire starter and place it in the stack of wood. Close the door. Please only use natural fire starters like dry birch kindling, FLAMAN wood shaving & wax starters, or non-glossy newspaper.
- Close the oven door.
- Shut the sauna door. Add a piece of hardwood every 30min.
- The heating process takes up to an hour, depending on ambient temperature.
Sauna
- The sauna is made from untreated wood, so hygiene is important: Shower before the sauna. Only enter the sauna barefoot and without clothes.
- Cover the bench you are sitting or lying on with a clean bathing or sauna towel. This ensures the wood will stay nice and clean for a long time.
- The sauna can accomodate up to 5 people. It is more comfy with two or three though.
- One session takes between 8 and 15 minutes. Set the timer inside the sauna to keep track of time.
- Place your towel & and sit or lie down on the bench. Nobody minds nudity in the sauna, but if you would like, you can of course cover yourself with your sauna towel. Nobody minds that either.
- Cool off outside in the cold air, lie in the snow, or spray cold water on yourself. Dry off and rest – but take care not to get cold! Wool blankets and hats can be useful. After 10-15min of rest, you can go for another sauna session. You typically do three sessions.
Temperature & Humidity
- There is a thermometer and hygrometer at the back of the sauna. Temperatures between 50° and 90°C are acceptable. Only heat the sauna to 70° and upwards if you’re used to this, though! Start small if you don’t regularly sauna.
- Adjust the temperature by adding a piece of hardwood if required.
- Hot air accumulates at the top of the sauna. Swing a sauna towel around for a few times to mix, if you would like.
- To start, the sauna is very dry. If you prefer steam, you can add a spoonful of water from the wooden bucket. This will make the felt temperature much higher.
- If you would like to add aromatics, you can put a few drops of sauna fragrance in the water in the wooden bucket and use that to make steam.
Closing
- The embers can burn on in the oven. Leave the oven door and ash tray closed.
- Dump out any water in the bucket.
- Leave the sauna door open for 10 minutes to let out any humidity.
- Put back all the sauna items where they were before. Close and lock the sauna.
- Put the key in the key safe and lock it.
